After a disappointing IPL 2025 campaign that saw Chennai Super Kings (CSK) finish at the bottom of the table, MS Dhoni offered an honest evaluation of the team’s shortcomings and outlined the way forward. Dhoni, who stepped back into the captain’s role mid-season following an injury to Ruturaj Gaikwad, acknowledged the team’s persistent batting woes and emphasized Gaikwad’s return as crucial to their resurgence.
At a recent private event, the CSK icon addressed the franchise’s key challenges and gave a strong indication that Gaikwad would remain central to their plans going forward. “Our batting order has been a concern. But with Rutu (Gaikwad) coming back from injury, things are looking better. We’re more settled now,” Dhoni stated.
During a chaotic season where CSK managed only four wins in 14 matches, the absence of a stable and productive top order hurt the team’s chances throughout the tournament. Gaikwad’s early-season injury, along with an inconsistent middle order, played a major role in derailing their campaign.
Gaikwad last featured for CSK on April 8 against Punjab Kings in Mullanpur. He had initially planned a stint with Yorkshire in county cricket but withdrew due to personal reasons. Now named in the West Zone squad for the upcoming Duleep Trophy, his return to competitive cricket appears on track.
Reflecting on the team’s struggles over the past two seasons, Dhoni hinted at changes ahead, especially with the IPL mini-auction scheduled for December. “I wouldn’t say we lost focus, but there were definite gaps to address. We’ll look to fix those in the upcoming auction,” he said.
Acknowledging CSK’s back-to-back underwhelming seasons, Dhoni stressed the importance of introspection and learning from mistakes. “The last two years haven’t gone our way. What’s vital is to understand why. That question was relevant last year as well,” he remarked.
Notably, Dhoni did not comment on whether he would continue playing next season. After CSK’s final match of the season, he had hinted that his decision would depend on how well his body recovers.
