In the 1190s, Turk-Afghan military general Bakhtiyar Khilji carried out an incident that will not only remind him of human cruelty and barbarity not only towards humans but also towards knowledge and culture. A group of invaders led by him destroyed the famous Nalanda University. During his victory of North and Eastern India, Khilji wanted to erase this center of Buddhist knowledge. There are many opinions behind this too. It is said that Khilji burnt the library of Nalanda University because the knowledge here could compete with Islam and he was jealous of it. However, many historians denote it and believe that he did so to end Buddhism.

Books kept burning for 3 months
Nalanda was established in 427 AD and was the center of knowledge throughout Asia. It was a residential university, which was built like a fort. When Bakhtiyar set fire to the library of Nalanda, there were more than 90 lakh handwritten palm letters manuscripts. The campus of the university was so huge that the fire started here for 3 months. Even before this, it was damaged by the invasion of Huns in the 5th century and Gaur Raja in the 8th century, but no one had burnt the library here. Bakhtiyar Khilji shook his misdeeds when King Prithu defeated him so badly that he never fought any other fight again. He could never fight war again with embarrassment. King Prithu actually finished Bakhtiyar Khilji forever.
