In a first in the history of IPL, over 400 cricket-crazy fans were rounded up by the police on Sunday evening for attempting to enter the Narendra Modi Stadium without valid tickets to watch the finals between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Punjab Kings (PBKS).
With all official tickets sold out, many desperate fans keen to witness RCB’s moment of glory tried to sneak in without tickets.
Chandkheda Police Station inspector told Mirror that by 4.30 pm the fans had already started streaming into the stadium but by 6.30 pm an unusual thing happened. “While genuine ticket holders were quickly making their way through the scanning counters, we spotted several groups lingering suspiciously in the buffer zone between Gate number 1 and 2. They weren’t moving forward, just hovering about which raised red flags,” said Solanki.
Upon questioning, it was found that none of the over 400 people had any valid tickets. “Most of them were die-hard RCB fans who, after failing to secure tickets, were trying to slip through,” Solanki said.
Police acted swiftly, rounding all of them and escorting them to the local police station. However, given their peaceful behaviour and passion for the sport, they were let off with a strict warning. “We understand the emotion behind it. RCB had never won an IPL trophy, and for many fans, watching Virat Kohli finally lift the cup was a dream come true. But safety and law cannot be compromised.” said Solanki.
This is the first time in the history of IPL finals that such a large number of fans were detained for attempted unauthorised entry. The match had been declared a high-security event due to record-breaking attendance, with all 132,000 seats reportedly occupied.
