WATCH: KKR's Sunil Narine fails bat gauge test in IPL 2025 match against Punjab Kings – Firstpost

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) didn’t just fail to chase down a 112-run target against Punjab Kings (PBKS) in Mullanpur on Tuesday. Their two batters, Sunil Narine and Anrich Nortje, also failed the bat gauge test during the encounter, it has been reported.
Opener Narine was the first to fail the test before the start of the chase. In a video going viral, reserve umpire Saiyed Khalid conducted the gauge test on Narine’s bat. However, the thickest part of the bat was not able to pass through the gauge.
This wasn’t a problem with Angkrish Raghuvanshi’s bat, who was also standing nearby, just outside the play area. His bat passed the gauge test.

While we could not see it in the video, it’s expected that Narine batted with a new bat on Tuesday as he scored only five runs off four balls. Raghuvanshi smashed 37 off 28.
The second incident took place at the end of the 15th over when Nortje came out to bat after the fall of Vaibhav Arora. His bat also failed the gauge test, forcing Rahmanullah Gurbaz to bring in spare bats.
BCCI now does bat checks on the field instead of in the dressing room. So if you’re wondering why umpires are checking bats or noticed Anrich Nortje changing his bat today, it means his bat did not meet the size rules.#IPL2025 #BCCI @IPL @BCCI pic.twitter.com/k3PVWRWO39
Nortje, however, was not able to use it as Andre Russell got out on the first ball of the next over and KKR were bowled out for 95.
The gauge test on bats in public is new for IPL fans. Earlier, these tests were conducted in the dressing room, however, recently the batters have been made to go under gauge test in the middle.
On Sunday, the umpires were seen checking the bats during the afternoon fixture between Rajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Jaipur. The checks were also conducted during the match between Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians.
The umpires in IPL 2025 are using the bat gauge test to ensure that the bats of the correct dimensions are used. As per the rules, the width of the bat cannot be more than 10.79cm, the thickness of the blade cannot be more than 6.7cm, the width of the edge of the bat cannot be more than 4cm and the length of the bat cannot be more than 96.4cm.
Using a gauge helps them check the dimensions and ensure that all batters are following the rules.
