CSK break silence on Dewald Brevis signing in IPL 2025 after Ashwin stirs controversy with 'extra pay' claim – Firstpost

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have finally spoken about how they signed South African batter Dewald Brevis for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season. The move had caused a lot of speculation after Ravichandran Ashwin’s recent comments on his YouTube channel.
Brevis was not bought in the IPL 2025 mega auction, but CSK signed him after Gurjapneet Singh got injured. The 22-year-old, whose base price was Rs 75 lakh, got Rs 2.20 crore from CSK as Gurjapneet was bought for that amount in the auctions. CSK have said in a statement that they followed all the rules and procedures while signing Brevis as a replacement player.
“Chennai Super Kings categorically clarifies that all actions taken by the franchise during the signing process of Dewald Brevis as a Replacement Player during TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 were in complete compliance with the rules and regulations of IPL,” the franchise stated.
🚨OFFICIAL STATEMENT🚨

Dewald Brevis signed as per the IPL Player Regulations 2025-2027, clause 6.6 under Replacement Players.
Ashwin had said that Brevis was in talks with a couple of teams after initially going unsold in the IPL 2025 auctions. Ashwin claimed that CSK paid extra money to get him as an injury replacement. He added that Brevis had asked for more than CSK’s offer because he felt that his value would go up if he performed, and the team later agreed to his demand.
“Brevis had a wild second half of the season for CSK. I heard 2-3 teams were in talks with him, but they weren’t willing to pay extra, so negotiations fell through. If I come now and do well, my value goes up. So pay me for that value.’ CSK nailed it by getting him for whatever number he negotiated. Now, they’ve got themselves a crown jewel,” Ashwin had said.
This comes after Brevis recently smashed a T20I century for South Africa. His 125-run knock in the second T20I against Australia is the highest for South Africa in T20Is. He became the youngest to score a T20I century for the Proteas, and also made the highest T20I score against Australia.
