In a one-sided encounter at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur on Thursday, Mumbai Indians (MI) delivered a resounding defeat to Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL), thereby eliminating them from the playoffs race. Chasing a daunting target of 218 runs, Rajasthan collapsed for just 117, handing Mumbai a massive 100-run win.
Mumbai Indians, showcasing dominance with both bat and ball, notched their sixth consecutive win of the season. Rajasthan Royals, needing a win to keep their playoff hopes alive, faltered collectively. Having lost eight out of their 11 matches so far, RR has officially bowed out of the playoffs contention.
Opting to bat first under the leadership of Hardik Pandya, Mumbai Indians amassed a formidable total of 217 runs for the loss of just two wickets in the allotted 20 overs. Openers Rohit Sharma (53 off 36 balls) and Rickelton (61 off 38 balls) set the tone with impressive half-centuries and stitched together a 116-run partnership for the first wicket.
Following them, Suryakumar Yadav (48 not out off 23 balls) and captain Hardik Pandya (48 not out off 23 balls) continued the momentum with powerful knocks, enabling MI to post a commanding total of 217 runs. This set Rajasthan a steep target of 218 runs.
In reply, Rajasthan Royals crumbled for 117 runs in 16.1 overs, never appearing in control of the chase. Promising young opener Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who had scored the fastest century in the previous match, was dismissed for a duck. In-form opener Yashasvi Jaiswal also fell cheaply, scoring just 13 runs.
Rajasthan kept losing wickets at regular intervals and were reduced to 76 for 7. Jasprit Bumrah inflicted a severe blow early by dismissing Riyan Parag (16) and Shimron Hetmyer (0) in his opening over. Impact player and spinner Karn Sharma played a pivotal role by removing Dhruv Jurel (11), Maheesh Theekshana (2), and Kumar Kartikeya (2), sealing the match for MI.
Ultimately, Rajasthan was bowled out for 117 in 16.1 overs, with Jofra Archer top-scoring with 30 runs. Among MI’s bowlers, Karn Sharma (3 for 23), Trent Boult (3 for 28), and Jasprit Bumrah (2 for 15) spearheaded the attack and ensured Rajasthan’s collapse. With this eighth defeat of the season, Rajasthan Royals are officially out of the playoffs race, while Mumbai Indians have surged to the top of the table with this emphatic victory.
