IPL ticket prices set to increase in line with tax rates – The Ticketing Business

Tickets to the Indian Premier League (IPL) are set to increase by up to 40% after the country’s government increased the goods and services tax (GST) on the cricket competition.
The base price of tickets was Rs1,000 (£8.40/$11.30/€9.70) but is now due to rise to between Rs1,280 and Rs1,400.
The increase puts the IPL in India’s highest GST bracket alongside casinos and horse racing clubs.
Following the change, the most expensive ticket for a home game to see defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru will likely go from Rs7,000 to Rs7,656.
The changes will be effective from September 22 and could also see the Pro Kabaddi League and Indian Super League witness an increase in ticket prices.
International cricket matches have been made exempt from the tax changes, and will remain in the 18% GST bracket after being protected.
The tax increase will bring in more money for the government on the immense popularity of the IPL, which made more than Rs6bn in revenue for the 2025 edition.
However, there are concerns that it could discourage families and younger fans from watching matches live, reducing accessibility to the sport.
“No tax for [The Board of Control for Cricket in India]—good,” Indian businessman Harsh Goenka wrote on social media.
“But increased 40% GST on IPL tickets. Incredible India: where cricket is a religion, the board is God, IPL is the temple, and the fans, the devotees, have to pay a higher offering.”
