Prestigious Institutions Interim Heads Whose Steering Indian Higher Education Report
It is not necessarily how grand the building of an institution is, the real strength is under its leadership. But what happens when the most prestigious central educational institutions of the country do not have a permanent head? The same situation is today with many well-known central universities, IITs, IIMS and NITs, where the boat of education is currently running on the basis of interim officials.
Well -known institute, but temporary leadership
According to a report by ‘The Indian Express’, 14% of the 130 higher educational institutions under the Ministry of Education are operating without permanent heads. These include Central University, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Indian Institute of Management (IIM), National Institute of Technology (NIT) and Indian Science Education and Research Institute (IISER).

Which institutions are affected?
According to the report, eight out of 48 central universities, two out of 23 IITs, four out of 21 IIMs, three out of 31 NITs and one in eight IISER institutions are currently working under interim leadership. Institutions like IIM Calcutta, IIM Lucknow, IIM Shillong, NIT Srinagar, IISER Thiruvananthapuram, Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), Sikkim University and Rajiv Gandhi University in Arunachal Pradesh have been running without permanent heads for more than a year.

Education policy can affect 2020
According to the report, this situation becomes more important when the Central Government is in the process of implementing reforms under the National Education Policy 2020. Usually interim or caretaker major major administrative decisions avoid making, which may obstruct the development and policy implementation of the institute. According to the general procedure, the government should start the search for the successor about six months before the end of the current chief’s term.
